My wife Liliane said that secondary residences in Europe usually have a name. After some reflection on a trip to Tahoe, I found an appropriate name for our first camper: “L’ Escargot” I could think of no name more apt for something that goes slowly, has it’s house on its back, and can stay anywhere for an indefinite period of time. Since then, all of my campers and motor homes have been named “L’Escargot” “L’Escargot II” was a mini motorhome that We used when our kids were small. “L’Escargot III” I bought this motor home in 1992 for a family cross country trip. We were eight people, four adults and four tweenagers (8-12 years old), the family dog “ Bambi” , and my daughter’s bird , “Picachu”, a cockatiel. We spent two and a half months on the road. This was to be a once in a lifetime freedom trip. When we left in July we had only three important dates and locations on our itinerary: Kennedy Airport in New York on August 1st so Anita could catch a flight back to Switzerland; Maine on August 18th for my Mom’s 75th Birthday; and back to Campbell California for school opening in September. Before we left our friend “Klea” gave us a book for the trip. All of the pages were blank. It was up to us to fill in the pages. Everyone took turns documenting and describing the daily events. We could write or draw or paste cards and brochures and flowers and other flora. This is a great family history book! This was our best “adventure trip” ( a term I used with the kids to avoid the dreaded “are we there yet?”. Any thing that came along could be our destination for the day). We went north along the Pacific Coast to Seatle, WA, then East to Yellowstone and Idaho, then North to Canada, then South and East again across the Continental Divide ( very slowly at altitude, singing the little train song, “I think I can, I th i n k I can ), then Mt. Rushmore, across the great plains, a tornado in South Dakota, Chicago and the Great Lakes, then on to Niagra Falls, then on to Freedom Park in New Jersey, Ellis Island, Liberty Island and “The Statue”, New York City, Connecticutt, Boston, The Maine Coast, then on to Quebec, Canada, then back to Maine for My Mom’s 75th Birthday, Finally we headed West through Vermont, Philadelphia and “The Bell”, Amish Country, St.Louis and “The Arch”, Kansas (flat tire and a bad thermostat, our only vehicle trouble of the trip), across Colorado to Denver, across Utah, and on to our cabin in Lake Tahoe California for a few days of rest. We made it back in time for school to the kid’s dismay! We all look back on “The Trip” as the best of times for all of us. Imagine what you could do with “L’Escargot”! We will give you a blank book when you purchase “L’Escargot”. You fill in your own pages! | |||
