Description of Sail boat for sale in / Ohio / Cincinnati / Info G Sloop-antique 1931 Governors Cup Boat
For Sale: 18’ 9” Antique “G” Boat 1931 Sail Number 1 (this listing service only went back to 1940 for the year) “G” Boat, G-Sloop or Governor’s Cup Boat Wooden Centerboard Sloop designed by Charles D. Mower Built by Morton Johnson, Bay Head, NJ I bought this boat from a friend knowing it was old and thinking that it was built in 1960 and not really sure what type of boat it was. As I began restoration I was puzzled by the look of some of the old hardware. The bronze hardware didn’t seem to me to be from the 60’s. I also wondered about the (5) coats of paint and (1) coat of fiberglass. I knew that the last time the boat might have been painted was the 70’s or at the latest early 80’s. It just didn’t make sense that someone would go to that much trouble, painting it five times in such a short period of time. There is a small brass plate with the maker Morton Johnson, Bay Head, NJ, and so I made some phone calls. I was fortunate to find a gentleman at “Toms River Society, Toms River, NJ. A group of Bay Headers went to Charlie Mower for a new design, who modified an earlier effort known as the “Hudson River 21”. Eighteen “G” Boats were built by Morton Johnson in 1936 to promote healthy Sunday racing. The class was inaugurated in style, with Governor Harold Hoffman attending the first race and awarding a trophy. The “G” Sloop was so well balanced that it needed no skeg and could sail to weather with less than three feet of centerboard down. In addition to main and jib, the boat carried a spinnaker that was small in comparison to the Lightning’s chute. If the boat had a bad feature, it was the mast. It weighed somewhere in the telephone pole category. Added 09/11/05 I then learned that no boats were really registered before 1960 and the last “G” was built in the 50’s. Racing of the class ceased in 1964. So based upon the paint and hardware clues I am fairly certain it is one of the early–built boats. And since no one knows where Hull #1 went, I would like to believe the sail indicates I am in possession of it. Added 05/05/06 Received letter from New Jersey Museum of Boating, stating that they believe Shamrock to be hull # 1 Meticulously restored to original this boat is believed to be Hull Number 1 built in 1931. The “Lightning Class” aced this “One Design Class” boat out in popularity because the Lightning was an easier project for the backyard builder.
